Leeway - Born to Expire

In the annals of New York hardcore and crossover thrash, few albums carry the weight and impact of Leeway's debut, "Born to Expire". Recorded in 1987, released in 1989, "Born to Expire" stands as a testament to the energy that defined the crossover sound of the late '80s. Despite not achieving major commercial success, Leeway was always an integral part of the NYHC scene.

From the moment the needle drops on the opening track, "Rise and Fall," the heavy guitars and drums hit your senses like a sledgehammer. Throughout the album's 12 tracks, Leeway delivers with an unflinching intensity, but "Born to Expire" is more than just a collection of mosh-inducing riffs. The band's musicianship shines through with their dynamic songwriting, demonstrating a level of depth and complexity that sets them apart from their peers. Production-wise, "Born to Expire" benefits from the touch of engineer Tom Soares, whose work behind the board gives the album a clarity and punch that allows every instrument to shine without sacrificing any of its raw intensity.

Generation Records and Upstate Records have teamed up to release a 35yr anniversary vinyl reissue. The reissue comes in 2 colors, Oxblood Red (Generation Records exclusive) and Blue Marble (Upstate Records exclusive). RevHQ also has an exclusive Black and Yellow Marble variant, each color variant is limited to 200 copies. If you missed out, pre-orders are now up for black vinyl.

In the years since its release, "Born to Expire" has rightfully earned its place as a classic album, inspiring countless bands and leaving an indelible mark on the hardcore and metal scenes. If you're a fan of hardcore punk, thrash metal, or just good old-fashioned musical catharsis, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the album. You won't be disappointed.

Raw Deal - '88 Demo

Raw Deal was formed in 1988 by former members of Breakdown: Carl Porcaro, Rich McLoughlin, and Anthony Drago. The trio recruited Anthony Comunale (former Token Entry vocalist) and Mike Sentkiewitz (former New York Hoods guitarist) to round out the lineup. The band recorded a 7-song demo on cassette, and began playing shows throughout the tri-state area. Shortly after Mike Sentkiewitz left the band, Raw Deal was signed by In Effect Records. Due to legal action, Raw Deal changed their name to Killing Time and released their debut album, "Brightside".

17 years after Raw Deal recorded their debut demo, Dead Serious Recordings released it on 7-Inch vinyl. The ’88 Demo was pressed in two color options, red and white. In 2017, Killing Time self-released their demo on 12” vinyl. The demo was pressed in 3 color options: Orange, Grey Marble, and Clear with Black/White Splatter. Fast forward to 2024, the ’88 Demo is once again available on vinyl thru Triple-B Recordings! The demo is pressed on 12" vinyl in 7 different color variants.

New York's Lockdown delivers a potent blend of metal and hardcore with their debut album "Step Over The Bodies". This seasoned band packs a punch with a powerful sound and adrenaline-infused anthems.

Lockdown’s, "Step Over The Bodies", features 15 songs that deliver a sonic barrage of tight guitars, explosive drumming, and hard hitting vocals. All songs deliver a high energy, punch in your face impact, in under 40 minutes. "Duked” and "Trail Of Tears" are my stand out tracks.

"Step Over The Bodies" is produced by Biohazard's Billy Graziadei and Danny Schuler, with engineering duties handled by Jeff Cummings of Sworn Enemy. This is a great collaboration resulting in a very good sounding album. Lockdown is definitely worth checking out, be on the lookout for their sophomore release coming in this spring!

DYS – Brotherhood

Boston legends, DYS, is commemorating the 40-year anniversary of "Brotherhood" with a limited edition vinyl release. 1,000 copies in two colors: clear (300 pressed) and translucent red (700 pressed). Both versions are single sided with a screen-printed B-side that reads, "TRUE TILL DEATH, BROTHERHOOD, DYS". This anniversary release also includes a bonus track, "Wolfpack", with backing vocals from Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton!

The first thing that hits you is the remastered audio. It's like hearing "Brotherhood" for the first time with the volume cranked to 11, a sonic upgrade that does justice to the band's intensity. The music is as relevant today as it was in 1983, a primal scream of youthful angst, a middle finger to conformity, and a call to arms for those who feel disenfranchised. This isn't just a nostalgia trip, it's a reminder that the anger and energy of hardcore punk are timeless.

Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, this reissue is a great tribute to a valuable piece of hardcore punk history. Copies are selling fast, Bridge Nine has sold out, RevHQ still has translucent red copies.

Proceeds from this edition are being donated to Dave Smalley's medical fund.
