Demoted - Shit for Brains

Demoted is a new hardcore outfit out of Brooklyn, NY, that isn't your typical new band. Formed around a treasure trove of demos unearthed from Cullen Gallagher's hard drive, the Brooklyn band brings raw potent hardcore and their DIY ethos to the scene.

Cullen's 2013 demos, initially sidelined by his former band, Night Squad, found new life in 2021 with his self-release titled, "No Use." Fast forward to 2022, Fuzzy Warbles Cassettes released the full collection of demos as "Not Myself Today." This release sparked the formation of the full band, reuniting Cullen with his Night Squad mate, Phil Harrington on bass. Completing the lineup is Chris Hopkins, who once fronted the band Anti-Difranco.

Demoted's most recent offering, "Shit for Brains", was originally self-released last year, it has since been reissued by Bad Channels Records. From the opening track, “I Feel Like Shit”, Demoted waste no time delivering a sound that's unmistakably hardcore. Pummeling drums, distorted power chords, and vocalist Cullen's raw shouted delivery. The hardcore influences are clear, but there's a fire in their playing, a sense that they're hungry to carve out their own niche.

With "Shit for Brains", there's an undeniable energy that grabs you by the throat and throws you into the pit. Demoted is definitely a band to keep an eye on.

Ancient Domains - Set In Stone

Ancient Domains is a new band formed by some familiar faces from the New York hardcore scene. The band features vocalist Matt Warnke (BOLD), guitarist Jon Biviano (Supertouch), drummer Rich Edsell (Supertouch), and bassist Jim Boehmer (High Speed Chase). The band is self-described as the "Spiritual Successors" to NYHC pioneers Supertouch.

"Set In Stone" is the 7-song debut release from Ancient Domains. The songs hit some of the typical themes: frustration, anger, and perseverance. Supertouch fans can expect a return to their blending of post and melodic hardcore. The music is well crafted with quality mixing, and the vocals were produced by Chaka Malik (Burn, Orange 9mm). Some stand-out tracks from the album are, “As Far As I'm Concerned”, “Confession” and "Lately".

The band’s debut is currently available on Bandcamp. For the vinyl enthusiasts, "Set In Stone" is available for pre-order thru Devarishi Records in two color variants: orange w/black splatter and yellow w/black splatter.

Overall, "Set In Stone" could be a nostalgic trip down memory lane for some, but it’s a promising debut. With a pedigree steeped in hardcore history, Ancient Domains is a band well worth checking out.
